Huawei GR3 2017
While reviewing the GR3 2017, another device in Huawei’s line, I will mostly make reference to its bigger brother the Honor 6X, the GR5 2017. These two are identical except for a few features mainly hardware. The GR3 2017 brings a little twist to its bigger brother’s design but keeps most of its performance specifications. Let’s see what it brings.
Design and Build
The GR3 2017 stands at 147.2mm tall 72.94mm wide and 7.6mm thick. It weighs 147 grams which is pretty light. It has a stunning body design with a glass back and plastics sides rounded in a thin metal frame giving it a beautiful finish. Its volume and power buttons are on the right and it has a 4.0 quick biometric fingerprint scanner that is amazingly fast and accurate in unlocking your device. The fingerprint scanner also supports gestures which a user can either enable or disable. It is a good addition though. Its overall body language is attractive given the size of the phone. Unlike its bigger brother the GR5 2017, GR3 2017 only has one primary camera.
The GR3 2017 has a 5.2 inch display which is an IPS LCD with 2.5D Arc Glass panel. The glass on its display is scratch resistant for protection. It has a Full HD 1080 x 1920 Pixels (424 PPI) resolution which can get very bright hence seeing your screen outdoors should not be an issue really.
Unlike its big brother we only have one camera on the GR3 2017. This however is not a draw back. The rear 12 MP camera performs just fine in which ever condition. It has geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, panorama, HDR, autofocus and an LED flash.
The selfie camera measures at 8 MP, f/2.0 and also does a good job with self-images.
Video can be recorded up to 1080p@30fps.
On the video and photo I would say the GR3 2017 though not as good as the GR5 2017 does a good job. It delivers more than what I had expected it to given that it’s a smaller version on the GR5 2017. I really can’t complain, given it also had manual modes for both video and picture.
Performance and Memory
Here we have a HiSilicon Kirin 655chipset, Octa-core (4×2.1 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU and a Mali-T830MP2 GPU. Same as the GR5 2017, or almost. It comes with Android Nougat 7.0 straight out the box and allows for Nougat’s interesting features like split screen for multi-tasking. Lag is almost never seen this this phone and it gives a seamless and smooth experience.
The GR3 2017’s internal memory is quite small. But not to worry since the 16GB ROM can be expanded up to 128 GB using a micro SD card. It comes with 3GB of RAM which comes in handy gaming, multi-tasking etc. with the phone.
This is a sector I usually consider a lot while making a decision to buy a phone. The GR3 2017 packs a 3000maAh battery which is non removable. With a 5.2 inch screen this is good since it will surely last a whole day without reaching for a charger.
Connectivity and Network
Network: The GR5 2017 supports GSM 2G, HSPA 3G and LTE 4G networks for all its versions.
It has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, NFC (although this is market dependent), has an FM Radio and comes with a microUSB 2.0, USB On-The-Go.
This GR has Vibration; MP3, WAV ringtones alert types, a 3.5 mm jack, loudspeaker and a bottom placed speaker that gives nice audio output. It also has a dedicated mic for noise cancelation.
Were this a comparison review between the GR3 2017 and the GR5 2017, I wouldn’t recommend any over the other. Both are phones of good build quality and awesome specs especially when it comes to their cameras. All the same, you love the GR5 2017 but want a smaller, compact and good quality phone, then the GR3 2017 is a phone to consider.
It comes in four colors Black, White, Gold and Blue.
