In an interview with Nation on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 Wamatangi indicated that the first step in the plan is already done after the ratification of a resolution by the County Executive Committee
What does this mean in a nut shell?
For Thika to be upgraded to be a city;
Among the strategies the governor is banking on to achieve this is the development of the Thika Industrial Smart City, the new city will be an industrial hub that will create jobs for thousands of Kenyans effectively improving their living standards.
Some facilities will be relocated from the town center to the nearby neighboring areas, such as landless, Gatuanyaga and Ngoliba. This will spur growth in all areas neighboring Thika town.
In Gatuanyaga for example, there are new factories set to be coming up such as EPZ, a proposed airstrip among others, this will result to a rise in demand of residential houses, and result to new businesses growth.
Other benefits to the locals include improved street lighting, traffic lights, and major road upgrades with the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) already committing to expand roads in the town and dual part of the Thika-Garissa highway
The fact that KENHA has promised to expand thika-Garissa road into a dual carriage, backed with the construction of the Greater eastern bypass connecting Garissa road-kangundo road and Mombasa road, is a clear indication of the much potential Thika holds
