Kikuyu is a town in Kiambu County, Kenya, which originated from a community of colonial missionaries. About 20 kilometers to the north-northwest of Nairobi's downtown lies this town. It has a railway station on the Mombasa line and can be reached from Nairobi in about 20 minutes via several routes, including a dual carriage road.

The Scottish Mission, or Thogoto Mission as the locals call it, left an important legacy.
• The first African pastors in Kenya were ordained in Kikuyu in 1926.
Kikuyu Town is one of the oldest settlements in Kiambu county that exhibits rich history, having sprung from colonial missionaries in the area.
It is where the founding father of our nation and the first president of the republic, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, was born, raised and schooled before he later went abroad to further his education.
The Scottish Mission, or Thogoto Mission as it is known by the locals, is located in Kikuyu.
The Imperial British East Africa Company extended an invitation in 1891 after realizing that the unevangelized interior of the region they had settled in was ripe for evangelization.
London saw the departure of a band of missionaries bound for British East Africa. They established the East African Scottish Mission base in Kibwezi.
Reverend Thomas Watson relocated to Dagoretti in 1894 to investigate the viability of relocating the mission station due to the prevalence of malaria in the region, which had claimed the lives of several missionaries.
They eventually migrated in 1898, where they formed themselves as 'Church of Scotland Mission' (CMS). And Watson passed away in Kikuyu in the year 1900 from pneumonia.
Originally dedicated as Watson Chapel, the Thogoto Chapel has been around since 1909.
It is widely agreed that the Maambere School (Kikuyu for "the first ones") was the first institution of higher learning in Kenya.
Minnie Cumming, Watson's widow, took up the mission after his death and opened a school at Thogoto to provide primary education to the local population.
The school first admitted males and females in 1901, and instruction was given solely through oral means.
It flourished under Minnie's leadership, and enrollment figures showed a steady rise throughout the years.
In 1909, boarding dorms were supposedly established, and by 1920, the school had provided a foundational education to more than 3,000 students.
Before becoming PCEA Rev Musa Gitau Primary School in 1975, the school was known as Thogoto Primary School in the 1950s.
The first African pastors were ordained in Kikuyu in 1926. Musa Gitau, Benjamin Githieya, and Joshua Matenjwa were their names.
The mission was absorbed in 1956 by the Synod of the Presbyterian Church in East Africa and the Overseas Presbytery of Kenya. The churches they presided over merged into a single church and formalized their newfound unity with a constitution.
The Reverend Musa Gitau established the first African PCEA church in Kenya.
The Torch of the PCEA Faithful The Kikuyu facility that was first broken ground in 1929 and finally opened to the public in 1933 is now known as PCEA Kimuri.
The word 'kimuri' translates to 'the torch' in Kikuyu.
Kikuyu has developed and expanded greatly in recent times. Many institutions, including the PCEA Kikuyu Hospital, PCEA Kikuyu Day High School, PCEA Rev Musa Gitau Girls' Secondary School, Thogoto Teachers' Training College, and Presbyterian Theological College (now Presbyterian University of East Africa), were founded as a result of the Christian mission.
Alliance High School and its sister institution, Alliance Girls' High School, were among the earliest institutions to provide secondary education to Africans; the former was created and led by one of the finest mathematicians, Carey Francis.
Kikuyu is a semi-urban settlement in Kiambu county, around 20 kilometers from Nairobi's central business district. The town has a population of about 240,000 people, making it a medium- to low-density location where most people live in the middle class. The Kikuyu neighborhood includes a combination of residential, business, and retail uses. A one-bedroom apartment costs around Ksh 3.5 Mn on average, while a two-bedroom unit goes for around Ksh 6.2 Mn. On average, a three-bedroom apartment will cost you Ksh 9.2 Mn. greater occupancy rates in one-bedroom apartments translate to a greater yield of 7 percent. The bulk of Kikuyu's residents fall into the middle class, hence the area caters to them. Location, proximity to major paved highways, unit size, and design are the primary factors that influence pricing. Apartments that offer convenient access to the main road, ample parking, and other perks are more likely to be rented out and to sell quickly.
