Kilome Hills Mauano Hike : 6th May 2017
Driving down on Mombasa road just 100km from Nairobi is the interesting land of contrast that is Kilome hills. Contrary to the popular belief that Ukambani is dry, Kilome will surprise the explorer with cool weather and serene landscape common in central Kenya. The hike starts at Mukaa a local centre with a school hospital and church. The first inland mission was started at Mukaa in 1903.The word mukaa is derived from the converts telling their friends and family that if they did not convert to Christianity, they would get lost.
The hike starts on a descent unlike many others and takes you through farmlands before winding through the surrounding hills. Pieces of mica glint on the ground and embedded in the hilly walls. Mica was mined here during WW1. It’s a mineral that’s been in use since antiquity, found in the cave paintings dating 40,000 years back and in industry today for cosmetics like mascara, blushers and nail varnish
The trail takes you through river beds some with mini waterfalls and pools of water depsnging on the season. The rock formations are also to behold for. On clear days, the views are stunning with Chyulu Hills, Sultan Hamud Hills, Kalembwani and even Mt Kilimanjaro visible in the horizon. The trail takes you back to Mukaa for a hot meal before travelling back the 100km to Nairobi.
