Purpose of role: To lead media communications at VSO, providing leadership to the global team, crisis communications support and engaging with the media to position VSO’s mission positively.


Reputation management and representation

  • To plan and manage media relations in crisis situations and where there is a real or perceived threat to volunteers, staff or our public profile and/or reputation.
  • To act as a key internal and external liaison around crisis communications management to funders and other key stakeholders, including DFID.
  • Where appropriate, be or advise the spokesperson for VSO and the youth-focused International Citizen Service (ICS) programme.
  • To advise Senior Management on media positioning and provide spokesperson training as necessary.
  • To advise on reputation implications for partnerships across VSO
  • To lead on relationship-building with key external stakeholders, print and online journalists, broadcasters and producers

Leadership, collaborative, engagement and knowledge-sharing

  • To lead and coordinate VSO and ICS’s media work and team to deliver coverage that increases our profile and influence as a leading international development organisation
  • To develop and maintain appropriate media based communications to position VSO with appropriate audiences
  • To build and maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders across VSO to help develop story ideas and content.
  • To ensure that all media activity is integrated with marketing and positioning work in line with impact deliverables and aspirations
  • To monitoring, evaluate and report on the effectiveness of media communications.
  • Initiate and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues in other charities
  • Lead and deliver on Marketing and Positioning initiatives, campaigns and projects; across business development, specifically public fundraising, partnerships and engagement, business pursuit, and recruitment

Team Development

  • To line manage Media team members working in other locations, providing the full remit of People Management practice, accompanied by your People Business Partner
  • To inspire and empower the team to develop as leaders using a developmental coaching management style

Financial and people resource management

  • Accountable for the Media Team budget, people resources and digital and physical media assets, ensuring financial controls and cost-effectiveness is in place

PERSON SPECIFICATION (selection criteria)

  • Significant experience of working as a Media Manager developing and implementing media strategies for a similar development organisation or charity or international organisation
  • Significant experience of crisis and reputation management.
  • Experience of using a range of media channels and platforms, including producing and packaging print, video, audio and online content for media outlets.
  • Experience of leading, networking and influencing effectively within a dispersed organisation, and of advising senior staff.
  • Significant proven experience in people management, performance management, and supporting the learning and development of individuals.
  • Significant proven experience of budget management.
  • Understanding of international development policy, the institutional aid environment and specifically UKAID and experience of using media to influence key opinion formers
  • Good understanding of media strategies and have an up-to-date knowledge of media trends and tools
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.

  • Ability to proactively build constructive relationships through clear communication, effective discussion and with mutual support for plans and ideas.
  • Ability to work closely with senior level executives, advising on opportunities, risks and new technologies using evidence


  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Public Relations, media management or other related subject area.
