Description: Some aldehydes are broadly effective against bacteria, fungi, mycobacteria, spores and viruses. Formol or formalin is an approximate 35 to 40% by weight solution of formaldehyde in water, usually with 10 to 15% methanol added to prevent polymerization. Formalin solutions containing formaldehyde concentrations equal to or higher than 5% are a widely used, effective liquid disinfectant. They are used for the sterilization of heat-sensitive objects, such as cystoscopes, laparoscopes, blood-stained instruments and hemodialysis instruments. Used in its gaseous form and in closed chambers, formaldehyde is applied to hospital sterilization as well as to the pharmaceutical industry. Likewise, it is
widely used as an environmental disinfectant of highly contaminated rooms which must be aired once they have been treated.
Directions: GENERAL PURPOSE DISINFECTION: Use 1 part Formaldehyde to 4 parts water (1:4) and apply at 400ml per square metre.
FOGGING: Use Formaldehyde neat and apply at a rate of 10 Litre to each 10,000 square feet of floor space in the building to be treated. 1000 square metres is approximately 10,000 square feet. Allow 2-3 hours after fumigation has ceased before any re-entry to the building. Always check that the atmospheric levels of formaldehyde are below the specified maximum exposure limit (MEL) before unprotected persons re-enter the building. A Formaldehyde Fumigant Neutraliser is available which may reduce the time required (contact a representative for details).
FOOTBATHS: Dilute at the rate of 5% v/v Formaldehyde in water.
