Clan Macleod and the clan chiefs' seat, Dunvegan Castle, are nearby. Failure of the distillery could have occurred many times as the laird refused to allow the distiller to build a pier so casks were floated to ships resulting in a high loss rate. It is the only distillery on the Isle of Skye. Until 1928, Talisker was a triple distilled whisky, although, with its heavy peating it was never likely to be as light as a Lowland malt. It is the lead whisky of Johnnie Walker Red Label.
Nose: Powerful peat-smoke with sea water saltiness, the liquor of fresh oysters, a citrus sweetness.
Palate: A rich dried-fruit sweetness with clouds of smoke and strong barley-malt flavours, warming and intense.
Finish: Huge, long, warm finish with an appetising sweetness.
