What is an EV?
An EV, or Electric Vehicle, is a car that runs solely on electricity. It has no internal combustion engine and is powered by a battery pack.
Pros of EVs
- Eco-friendly: Zero tailpipe emissions
- Lower running costs: Electricity is generally cheaper than fuel. There are some cars that cost about Ksh 600 to fully charge the car’s batteries.
- Quieter ride
- Government incentives and tax breaks in some regions
Cons of EVs
- Limited range compared to traditional cars. Going on long trips can be a challenge especially because of lack of infrastructure of charging stations
- Longer charging times
- Higher upfront cost. An EV might be a bit more expensive to buy
- Charging infrastructure might not be as developed in all areas
The Hybrid version
A hybrid car combines a traditional gasoline engine with an electric motor. It can run on either or both power sources.
What is the difference between a hybrid and an EV?
- Hybrid: Uses both gasoline and electricity.
- EV: Runs solely on electricity.
Should you get an EV or Hybrid car in Kenya?
Consider factors like your daily commute, access to charging stations, budget, and environmental concerns. If you have a short daily commute and access to charging, an EV might be suitable. If you need a longer range and worry about charging infrastructure, a hybrid could be a good option.
With fuel in Kenya being quite expensive, having an EV could save you more money in the long run.
