According to the latest Digital 2024 Report, in collaboration with Visual Capitalist, Kenya has emerged as the global leader in social media usage, with users spending an average of 3 hours and 43 minutes daily on various social media platforms, excluding any form of browsing on the internet. 

The “typical” internet user spends almost two and a half hours daily on social media globally. This tells you that Kenyans spend one hour and 13 minutes more than the average time internet users spend on social media worldwide. The data was based on users aged between 16 years and 64 years. 

The digital report shows that Kenya’s high social media engagement is due to the internet penetration rate which stood at 40.8 percent of the total population in January 2024. In Africa. Kenya is ahead of South Africa, ranked number two and Nigeria at number five.

South Africa was ranked number two with an average of 3 hours 37 minutes spent online, followed by Brazil with 3 hours 34 minutes, the Philippines with 3 hours 33 minutes, and Nigeria closed the top five with an average of 3 hours 23 minutes spent online.

The report also established that on average, women spend 16 minutes more per day on social media than men.

TikTok has the highest average time spent per user, while YouTube accounts for the greatest overall share of total social media time.

Japan emerged as the country with citizenry who spent the least time on social media with users averaging just 1 hour and 53 minutes daily.

With more than 5 billion social media users globally, recent trends suggest that humanity will spend a combined total of 500 million years on social media in 2024 alone!
