International Women’s Day 2025: What Is It And How Can You Get Involved?

This International Women’s Day 2025, the theme Accelerate Action challenges us to take bold steps toward real progress. How will you make a difference?

International Women's Day

International Women’s Day (IWD), is celebrated annually on March 8th. On this day, the world comes together to recognize the efforts and achievements of women and push for a more inclusive and equal society. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” challenges us to go beyond the conversations and take real steps towards creating a more gender equal society. According to the World Economic Forum, full gender parity won’t be achieved until 2158, over a century from now, at our current pace. That’s too long to wait. Shocking right?

Women have fought (and are continuing to fight) hard to break barriers in the workplace, business, politics, and beyond. But is this enough? Why can’t we all, both men and women, step forward in solidarity to help #AccelerateAction? Real progress calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.

So, how can we take action? And what does leadership look like in a world that still has a long way to go? Let’s hear from inspiring women who are accelerating action in their own ways.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Costabir – CEO, BuyRentKenya & PigiaMe

As a CEO, Lizzie understands that leadership is more than personal success, it’s about paving the way for others.

“Being a woman leader means embracing the responsibility to champion gender equality and drive meaningful change. True equality requires allies, especially men, to step up and advocate for inclusion through initiatives like HeForShe. Every action, big or small, counts toward progress.”

Lizzie believes that confidence isn’t something you wake up with, it’s something you build every single day.

Her advice to future women leaders?

“Don’t wait for permission. Speak up, take risks, and lift other women as you rise. We’re stronger together.”

Nancy Gesuka – Customer Experience Lead – PigiaMe

For Nancy, accelerating action isn’t just about breaking barriers, it’s about creating opportunities for others, especially the youth and young mothers.

“I’ve always believed in lifting others as I climb. That’s why I started my beauty business, not just as a personal venture, but as a way to provide jobs, skills, and hope for young people. I wanted to build something that goes beyond just a paycheck, something that empowers them to grow and dream bigger.”

Beyond her business, Nancy mentors young mothers in underserved communities, helping them build confidence, gain skills, and create better futures for themselves and their children.

“My focus is on creating spaces where people can thrive, whether through employment or mentorship. When we invest in others, we accelerate progress for everyone.”

Annah Kalahi – Marketing Lead – PigiaMe

As a marketing lead, #AcceleratingAction isn’t just about personal success according to Kalahi, it’s about lifting others and creating opportunities for them to grow.

“Growing up, I watched my mum empower so many women, always finding ways to uplift those around her. One story that stuck with me was how she helped our house manager transition into a shop assistant, then a manager, and eventually, a business owner. That lesson shaped how I approach leadership today.”

In both her career and business, Annah believes in opening doors and giving people the confidence to soar.

“I guide, but I also step back. Empowerment isn’t about holding hands the entire way, it’s about giving people the tools, trust, and space to thrive. If I can impact even one person, no matter how small, that’s a legacy worth building.”

And I can attest to this firsthand. As her protégé, Annah has given me my own set of Red Bull wings. She’s created a space for me to explore my strengths, refine my skills, and truly own my role. As a social media manager, she doesn’t just direct, she corrects, asks for my opinions, and trusts my expertise. That kind of leadership? It’s rare, and it’s exactly what empowerment should look like.

How You Can Take Action Right Now

Celebrating International Women’s Day 2025 isn’t just about posting on social media, it’s about taking action. For too long, society has pitted women against each other. But the truth? Women thrive when they support each other. Let’s prove that by lifting each other up. Here’s how you can be part of the movement:

  • Support Women-Owned Businesses – Shop from, collaborate with, and promote businesses run by women, especially those near you or those you know on social media.
  • Mentor and support other women – Share your knowledge, open doors, and advocate for those who need it.
  • Speak Up for Inclusion – Challenge bias, advocate for equal opportunities, and support policies that promote gender equality.
  • Call out bias – Speak up when you see discrimination, whether in the workplace or beyond.
  • Invest in Yourself – Whether it’s learning new skills, negotiating your worth, or stepping into leadership roles, take action toward your own growth.
  • Join the Conversation – Attend women’s leadership events, engage in discussions, and push for change in your industry.

Final Thoughts

This year, #AcceleratingAction isn’t about waiting, it’s about doing. It’s about making bold moves today so that the next generation doesn’t have to fight the same battles we do now.

Men, your voice matters too, advocate for the women in your workplace, mentor rising female leaders, and push for policies that create equal opportunities

We are not just hoping for change. We are making it happen.

So, what action will you take today?
