Coming back to Egypt, where the current stream of my
thoughts started, I envy, despite myself, those in Their
Square, who appeared to know who they were, without
having to struggle with multiple and overlapping
identities. Maybe that is simplistic. I think the
disadvantage that East African Asians had to grapple with
was that our confusing identities weakened rather than
reinforced each other. To resent the arrogant colonizing
British and yet depend upon them for maintaining the
status quo that safeguarded the many advantages we had
painstakingly gained by dint of hard work, self discipline
and other capacities, was not a happy place to be. It
corroded integrity and eroded self-respect.
